PAS 24 and Secured by Design, in plain terms
PAS 24 is a physical attack test: a trained tester with hand tools gets a fixed time to open the window or door. Secured by Design is the police accreditation that requires it plus a specification review. Fixed lights are not tested because there is nothing to force.
Which applies to you
- A new build or an extension
Approved Document Q makes PAS 24 mandatory on accessible windows and doors. Your building control officer will ask for the certificate; we issue it with the handover pack.
- An insurer asking for a specification
Quote Secured by Design plus the cylinder standard. Most insurers want TS007 3-star or a 1-star cylinder with 2-star furniture, and we fit 3-star as standard on entrance doors.
- A ground-floor flat or a side return
Specify laminated glass as well. PAS 24 tests the frame and the lock; laminated glass is what stops the pane being taken out, and it is a glass upgrade, not a frame one.
- A steel security door
Already the highest specification in the range: multipoint locking, anti-lift bolts, reinforced hinge side, PAS 24 and Secured by Design. Ask about LPS 1175 only if a commercial insurer has named it.
